The San Francisco Fire Department will be offering Neighborhood
Emergency Response Team Training to the Bayview District beginning on
Thursday, July 23.
The training will begin at 6:30 pm and end at 9:30 pm, each Thursday
night for six weeks. The classes will take place at the Bethel Grace
Lutheran Church Hall, at Woolsey and Goettingen.

MAYOR NEWSOM LAUNCHES SUMMER JOBS FOR YOUTH
Newsom’s plan will create 1,400 jobs for youth under 18 years old
San Francisco—Mayor Gavin Newsom today launched the Summer Empowerment &
Employment Development (SEED) Program. SEED will provide education and
training to inspire youth to become advocates in their communities. This
includes job training, mentoring, attending workshops, a community
service project, and supporting the City’s summer lunch program for
children and youth living in public housing sites.
“Traditionally, summer is the time when the majority of young people
have their first work experience, and SEED is a creative way to provide
that opportunity,” said Mayor Newsom. “Young people must have the
opportunity to work, thrive, and to contribute to the vitality of the
local economy, and in some cases their own family’s economic survival.
Part-time work experience for high school students leads to more
confidence in
their abilities, better time management skills, and enhanced academic
success.”
Despite economic and fiscal challenges, the City will continue funding
on-going youth employment initiatives. This summer 1,400 slots for youth
under 18 years old will be made available via DCYF funded initiatives,
such as the Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) (675
slots), New Directions (220 slots) which targets youth engaged in the
juvenile justice system, Workreation (157 slots), and Youth Works (200
slots), amongst others. SEED is a pilot program during summer 2009,
initiated by the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF)
and the San Francisco Housing Authority (SFHA). The two agencies
together will provide $131,000 to develop this program, which will
employ and educate the 30 youth at 14 public housing sites throughout
San Francisco over the course of 10 weeks, from June 15 through August
21, 2009.
The 14 adults hired will provide mentorship and supervision to the
youth. The Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC) serves as the
administrative and fiscal agency and will provide technical support as
needed. Each hired adults will work 17.5 hours per week for 9 weeks @
$11 per hour, which equates to approximately
$1800 for the duration of the program. Each hired youth will work 20
hours per week for 10 weeks @ $9.79 per hour, which equates to
approximately $2000 for the duration of the program.
The 14 SFHA Sites are:
Alemany, Ping Yuen & Ping Yuen North, Westbrook & Hunters Point East,
Alice Griffith, Robert Pitts Apartments, Westside Court, Bernal Plaza
East, North Beach Place, Hayes Valley, North & South Portrero Annex &
Terrace, Valencia Gardens, Hunters View, and Sunnydale
Today, Mayor Newsom also announced the expansion of DCYF’s Summer Lunch
Program from 6 SFHA sites to 14. The expansion will provide lunch to
potentially 3,979 youth 18-years old and younger, 5-days a week,
throughout the duration of the 10-week summer. The expansion of the
Summer Lunch Program is a reflection of the HOPE SF commitment to
connect new and increased resources to disconnected and isolated
communities. Mayor Newsom made today’s announcement in the
Bayview-Hunters Point district of San Francisco, at the Hunters View
public housing complex.
Arrests of interest:
June 14, 2009-Base Rock Cocaine for sale, Transportation of Cocaine,
Parole Violation-7:17pm-1200 blk of Egbert-CN#090611736:
Members of Bayview’s plainclothes team were in the area of Egbert and
Jennings when they saw two people that they know from numerous prior
contacts, engaged in a drug transaction. Officers detained both and
arrested one after an initial investigation. The suspect, who is on
parole, was sent back to prison.
June 13, 2009-Carjacking w/dangerous weapon-2:39pm-800 blk of
Barneveld-CN#090608028:
Members of Bayview’s plainclothes team responded to the area of Silver
and Girard regarding a stolen vehicle, obtained in a carjacking incident
and the suspect, who was wanted for the carjacking. Officers watched as
the suspect entered the vehicle and started the car. Officers placed the
main suspect and one other into custody without incident. Officers
detained one other subject, but released her after an initial
investigation. Officers also discovered that the suspects they had in
custody were wanted for kidnapping as well.
June 12, 2009-Terrorist Threats-12:04pm-1400 blk of
Illinois-CN#090604474:
Officers Hastings and Viera responded to a business regarding a threats
report. The officers met with the victim who told them that a known
suspect had been making death threats to the victim and his son. The
officers responded back to the business when the victim called a second
time stating that the suspect was on the premise. Officers took the
suspect into custody, without incident.
June 12, 2009-Disturbing The Peace, Attempting to take weapon from
Police Officer, Resisting, Delaying Police-11:10pm-800 blk of 22
St-CN#090606935:
Officers Cowhig, Cader, and Burkhart responded to a disturbing the peace
call. The officers recognized one of the subjects from a prior arrest
and advised the subject that he would be patted down for weapons, which
he has been known to use. Officers attempted to search the subject who
resisted officers and attempted to take one of the officer’s baton. The
subject was unable to get the baton and officers had to use force to
take him into custody. Officers also observed that the suspect had been
drinking and smelled of alcohol. No one was injured during the
incident.
ROBBERIES-NO ARREST:
June 13, 2009-Robbery w/knife-10:05am-Felton St-CN#090607183:
An elderly victim was robbed by two suspects in a parking lot area. The
victim told officers that he was on his way to Walgreens when two
suspects approached him, brandished a knife at him and demanded his keys
and wallet. The victim fought the suspects and the suspects fled the
area without getting any of the victim’s belongings. The victim was not
injured during the incident. A robbery unit is handling the case.
June 12, 2009-Robbery w/gun-8:58pm-Pennsylvania/22nd-CN#090605808:
A victim was robbed by two unknown suspects as he was walking on
Pennsylvania from 22nd Ave. The victim told officers that two subjects
stopped him, put a gun to his head, and demanded money. The victim, in
fear for his life, gave the suspects his belongings. The suspect, after
completing the robbery, turned and faced the victim, with the gun in
hand. The victim was able to get a good look at the gun and advised
officers of its make and model. The suspects fled on foot after the
incident. The victim was not injured.
June 12, 2009-Robbery w/gun-8:10pm-3RD/Marin-CN#090605864:
A victim was robbed by two suspects while waiting for a train on the
Muni platform. The victim told the officers that a group of eight
juveniles walked up to him and demanded his cell phone. The victim
replied, “Hell no, I ain’t giving you my stuff.” One of the suspects
pulled out a gun and hit the victim on the head, while taking the cell
phone out of the victim’s hand. The remainder of the suspects stood by
and watched as this happened. All of the suspects fled the area after
the incident. The victim refused treatment and stated he was not
injured.
June 12, 2009-Robbery w/gun-12:01am-17th/Deharo-CN#090604719:
A victim was robbed of his cash, wallet, headphones camera game boy,
game cards, cell phone and mp3 player while at the bus stop. The victim
told officers that as he was seated inside the bus shelter, reading a
book, two suspects walked by the bus stop. Five minutes later, the
suspects returned, pointed a gun at him and told him, “Give it up, give
me the bag.” The victim gave the suspects his bag and wallet. The
victim was not injured during the incident.
June 11, 2009-Robbery w/force-10:00pm-Oakdale/Palou-CN#090610374:
A victim was robbed of an i-pod touch phone while on the Muni T Line.
The victim told officers that he was on the T line writing an email when
an unknown suspect came up to him and took his ipod from his hands. The
suspect jumped off the train when it pulled into the stop at Palou and
Oakdale. The victim was not injured during the incident.

Graffiti Alert: $250.00 Reward Program
Day Watch Sergeant, Ava Garrick, is Bayview Station’s Graffiti Abatement
coordinator. Each month she collects surveys from the various beat
officers to report graffiti to DPW and our own Graffiti Unit within the
