Seva* Health policy & advocacy for BVHP
Recommendations drafted, review invited

Why are Yvette Robles, Ed Donaldson, Debra Keller, Espanola Jackson, and Randy Quezada smiling?  They just got an advance draft of a set of healthcare policy recommendations that emerged from a community-based, participatory partnership between residents and leaders in BVHP, SF General Hospital doctors and other experts at University of California.
They are part of the "Accountability Council," which has taken on a community review of the draft so that the final document speaks the truth and advances our community toward wellness in practical ways.
You can meet the other Accountability Council members and Seva* leaders online.  At the same time, comment on the Seva* Healthcare Policy Recommendations & Advocacy Tool.  It's all at www.SevaPartnership.org.

Sunday Streets, eco-everything, and Russian visitors

Reports about last Sunday's pile-up of BVHP events have been coming in to Footprints this week.

Sunday Streets brought street closures deeper into the heart of Bayview, but few participants in the Southland.  Those who walked or wheeled near the Quesada Gardens were having a lovely time under blue Bayview skies. The next Sunday Streets closure of 3rd Street is scheduled for May 23th.  Email Beth Byrne for more information.

Third Street in the Bayview was practically empty Sunday afternoon. Only a handful of bike riders, roller skaters and pedestrians covered the street, getting exercise and enjoying the calm atmosphere.  Alex Estrada, Citizen Report

Sunday Streets returned to the Bayview and the Central Waterfront for a third straight year yesterday, welcomed by a resplendent, sunny day and thousands of participants on bike, foot and skate.  Michael Rhodes

The official opening of the EcoCenter at Heron’s Head drew rave reviews from those who attended on Sunday, and others who were part of ritual ceremonies Saturday evening.  Literacy for Environmental Justice has poured its collective heart into this project designed to educate us all about environmental justice issues facing our community.

Quesada Gardens neighbors hosted a busload of Stanford students and students from universities in Moscow who were in the area for a conference.  Neighbors and students mixed it up at the Quesada Gardens' Founders Memorial hillside (pictured), the Bridgeview Community Garden, and the Latona Community Garden.

Overheard...

"I can't believe those guys got the three stumps we've been wrestling with out of the ground!" - James

"Bayview is the most whimsical neighborhood in San Francisco." - Jacob

"Some of us don't understand the concept of American community service, and why people do this for free." - Anda (Russian delegation organizer)

   Incidents of Interest:

On April 19th at 9:30 am, Officers McGuire and Reiter responded to the
1100 block of Quesada regarding a call of a possible burglary in
progress of a warehouse. The caller had stated that three subjects were
seen entering the facility and was worried that they might be attempting
to steal something inside. When the officers arrived, they conducted a
search of the entire facility in an attempt to locate the suspects.
There was nobody in the building. What they did find in the building
was very interesting. They found a huge room dedicated to growing
marijuana! There were many well cared for plants in various stages of
growth, basking under the artificial glow of very sophisticated lighting
equipment. This equipment was hooked up illegally. Not only was an
enormous amount of electricity being stolen, it also posed quite a fire
hazard due to the make-shift circuits. PG&E had to be called in to shut
off the power to the building entirely. In another room, the officers
found numerous tubs full of dried marijuana ready for distribution. They
quickly were able to ascertain who the individual was that had rented
the facility and was ultimately responsible for this "grow house". In
assisting the Narcotics Division (who responded to take over the
investigation), the officers spent hours at the location collecting and
bagging up the plants while surrounded by the unmistakably pungent smell
of the marijuana (For anyone who may not know, the odor of marijuana
plants tends to permeate everything and the poor officers making for
some pretty strange from the other patrons in the taqueria lunch line
later on that day). An arrest in this case is imminent. (Case No.
   100361017)

   Arrests of Interest:

On April 21st at 9:30 pm, Bayview Plainclothes Officer Schaffer obtained
the cell phone number of a suspected local meth dealer. Acting as a
customer, the officer contacted the subject and placed an order for a
large amount of methamphetamine. The subject, happy to make such a big
sale, agreed to a deliver the goods to his new “client” that same night.
Officers Schaffer and Valdez met with the subject at the specified
location about an hour later to “complete the deal”. The suspect brought
the agreed upon amount of methamphetamine, as promised. The officers
just brought their handcuffs. He was arrested and booked at Bayview
   Station. (Case No. 100370278)

   Safety Tips Safety Tips

!!! SAN FRANCISCO POLICE URGE SAFETY AWARENESSS !!!

San Francisco police are urging the public to be vigilant about their
safety in public, particularly when using Muni.

         · While on Muni vehicles and at Muni bus stops and
platforms, citizens are urged to be vigilant about their
surroundings and to note any suspicious activity. While on Muni
buses, be wary of persons standing especially close or jostling,
which may indicate a possible pickpocket or robbery attempt.
While waiting for a bus, try to be at a location where there are
other persons waiting with you. If you are the only person
waiting, go to another stop where there are others waiting.

         · Be especially careful when using electronic devices on
transit vehicles. Opportunist criminals know that a person
talking on a cell phone, listening to an i-Pod, or texting, is
distracted and thus an easy target. Try to avoid using any
electronic device while seated or standing near the rear exit of a
transit vehicle, since this door provides a quick exit for
         grab-and-run suspects.

         · If it essential for you to use an electronic device on
the street, be aware that you may be a target for theft.
Opportunist criminals, sometimes operating in groups, look for
people using these devices and often will approach a victim from
behind, knowing that the person talking on a cell phone, texting,
or using an i-Pod is distracted. Some of these criminals are
armed with a handgun. Do not be so preoccupied that you become
unaware of your surroundings and not notice a person or persons
         nearby acting suspiciously.

          · Immediately report any robbery by calling 9-1-1.
